By definition, dental treatment refers to procedures related to teeth or structures supporting teeth, including examinations. We can also describe a dental procedure as any treatment involving a dentist or dental practitioner working on your mouth. According to the World Health Organization, oral diseases are major public health concerns due to their high incidence and prevalence worldwide. Dental problems are among the primary concerns globally. Medical dental centers in Turkey play a crucial role in providing dental treatments to address these concerns. We aim to provide all necessary information about dental treatment, dental implants in Turkey, and the process of obtaining new teeth in Turkey.
The Role of Technology in Dentistry in Turkey
Digital dentistry has revolutionized the practice of Prosthodontics. Most clinical and laboratory procedures can now be performed using digital tools. Dental clinics in Turkey are equipped with the latest technology to provide advanced treatments. Medical and dental histories are now supplemented by electronic questionnaires. Digital radiography aids dentists in making quick and accurate diagnoses. Furthermore, digital photography and 3D facial scanning, combined with appropriate software, assist dentists in treatment planning, allowing patients to evaluate the final results of restorations and promoting treatment plans.
Dentists in Turkey can make accurate diagnoses using well-made dental photos from various angles. Recent dental x-rays enable dentists to make precise diagnoses for patients.
Implant placement has been simplified with the evolution of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). CBCT enables doctors to see all details in the mouth, leading to better diagnostics for patients. Thanks to technology, dentists can also conduct online consultations using platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp.
Even before visiting Turkey for dental treatments, doctors can provide diagnoses and details on necessary procedures based on available x-rays or dental photos.
The Most Popular Dental Treatment in Turkey
Turkey has become popular for dental treatments around the world. People come for all types of treatment ranging from simple teeth cleaning or whitening to zygomatic implants. I will describe in detail some of the most popular dental treatments in Turkey in no particular order.
Dental Implants
The dental implant is a screw-shaped titanium medical device inserted into the jawbone, known as an "intraoral intraosseous implant." The implant allows you to replace a missing tooth in a very aesthetic way with a very comfortable result because the tooth is fixed and independent of its neighbors, like a natural tooth. The dental implant also allows other types of dental prostheses to be fixed: crown, bridge, dentures.
Many people come to Turkey to place one or more implants for missing teeth. Some come for treatments like All-on-4, All-on-5, or All-on-6. The dental implant procedure is generally done in two visits. During the first visit, necessary extractions are performed, and the implants are placed. To allow patients to resume their activities after implant treatments, we provide removable or fixed temporary dentures on implants, as recommended by dentists after consultation.
There are approximately two hundred implant brands worldwide, with around twenty well-known brands. Among these well-known brands, about five are highly renowned and high-end. The choice of an implant brand depends on your budget. The top 5 brands of implants known for their quality and innovation in the field of dental implants are Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Dentsply Sirona, Zimmer Biomet, BioHorizons, and Implant Direct. Other implants are also well-known for their results and advanced technology, such as Osstem, Neodent, Megagen, and SWISS.
There are characteristics to consider when choosing an implant brand, whether among leading brands or entry-level brands.
Sealed conical connection: The most important feature for a dental implant is this sealed connection. During chewing with a dental implant, the abutment and implant make micro-movements. This allows saliva, bacteria, and food particles to enter the implant. Bacteria then hide in an area inaccessible to the immune system. If these microorganisms proliferate, they can cause slight inflammation around the implant, which is invisible and unfelt but harmful in the long term. To eliminate this risk, high-end dental implants have a sealed conical connection.
Surface treatment: A specific surface treatment allows bone cells to better adhere to the implant, promoting more effective osseointegration. The surface can be roughened by sandblasting to create micro and nano-structures that enhance adhesion.
Fixation system: Screwed or cemented: A prosthesis can be cemented onto the implant abutment with dental cement, a permanent adhesive designed to last for decades. The downside of this cement is that it is so strong that it is impossible to remove. To avoid this issue, the patient can opt for a prosthesis fixed by screwing or transverse fixation, slightly more expensive but allowing the prosthesis to be removed by a dentist when needed.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are prostheses used to restore the shape, function, and appearance of damaged teeth. A dental crown is a cap that covers entirely or partially a damaged or weakened tooth. It is designed to restore the size, shape, strength, and improve the appearance of the tooth.
There are several types of crowns:
- Metal crowns: Made from alloys of precious metals (such as gold) or non-precious metals. They are extremely durable and withstand chewing forces well. Their main drawback is their unaesthetic appearance.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns: Offer a good compromise between strength and aesthetics. However, the underlying metal can sometimes appear as a dark line near the gum.
- Ceramic/porcelain crowns: Offer excellent aesthetics as they can be matched to the color of natural teeth. They are ideal for front teeth but are less resistant than metal crowns.
- Zirconia crowns: Made from zirconium dioxide, they combine aesthetics and strength. They are increasingly popular for their durability and natural appearance. More than 80% of crowns in Turkey are made of zirconia.
Dental crowns are generally used to beautify broken teeth and completely rebuild the smile. For a complete smile reconstruction, one must stay in Turkey for a period of 7 days.
The first step, after oral consultation with dentists and X-rays, is to take a digital impression to send to the laboratory for designing and shaping the teeth. You will need to choose, with the help of the dentist and your medical consultant, the shape and color of your choice. Then comes the process of reshaping the natural teeth. There is a difference between crowns and dental veneers in terms of preparation, reshaping, and appearance. The reshaping process takes about 3 hours, depending on the dentist and the patient.
The crowns are placed after several trial appointments and corrections until the desired result is achieved.
Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are crafted to enhance the appearance of one’s smile. These thin shells are placed exclusively on the surface of natural teeth, requiring a high level of expertise, time, and experience to ensure optimal results. Notably, this treatment generally necessitates minimal reshaping of natural teeth, typically between 0.3 and 0.5 mm.
The process of applying veneers is more time-consuming compared to dental crowns, typically spanning around 10 days. Additionally, veneers tend to be slightly more costly. However, it's crucial to note that veneers may not be suitable for all patients, as this treatment is delicate and requires specific conditions for success. Factors such as teeth alignment, the presence of adequate tooth enamel, absence of severe bruxism (teeth grinding), and the presence of minor to moderate aesthetic concerns play a significant role in determining candidacy for veneers.
With proper dental care and hygiene practices, veneers can last between 10 to 15 years. It is advisable to undergo regular dental check-ups at least once a year and to avoid consuming very hard or abrasive foods that may impact the longevity of veneers.

Composite Filling or Bonding
Composite bonding is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of teeth. It involves applying a tooth-colored composite resin to the surface of teeth to repair or enhance their appearance.
Compared to veneers, composite bonding does not require any reshaping of natural teeth. However, composite bonding is not always suitable for correcting severe dental problems such as severe misalignments or heavily damaged teeth. Due to their thinness and the fact that they are placed directly on existing teeth without significant reshaping, composite bonding can sometimes give a slightly bulky or thick appearance to the teeth. Lastly, although rare, some patients may experience increased sensitivity after the procedure.
Composite bonding is an excellent option for those seeking a quick and cost-effective solution to improve the appearance of their teeth. It provides good aesthetics and preserves the natural structure of the teeth. However, it is important to consider its limitations in terms of durability and resistance to stains and wear. For longer-term results, other options such as porcelain veneers or crowns may be considered.
I invite you to contact our team to receive a diagnosis and determine if your case is suitable for composite bonding treatment.
